Working with existing programs Traffic Tamers can be used to supplement your existing Traffic Calming and Safe Routes to School programs or it can be used as a stand-alone program. Traffic Tamers helps your city reduce the amount of staff time spent on responding to negative complaints and to spend more time on designing positive street environments. Traffic Tamers gives residents the tools to resolve most neighborhood and school traffic problems themselves - basically because they are their own problem! When residents approach the city to complain about traffic, all departments have a standard first response. Residents are given a Do-It-Yourself Traffic Taming Kit. Your city decides the contents of the kit, but the core elements are: Traffic Taming DVD. Residents learn five techniques for taming traffic. After each technique is explained, they pause the DVD and discuss how they may use that technique in their street. The DVD also shows them how to run two events that will help them build the social life of their street and promote an 'outbreak of civility'. The DVD can also be used to run a school program. Traffic Taming Guidelines. Because different cities have different rules and regulations about some of the self-help traffic taming techniques, it is important that your city put very clear guidelines in the Kit as to what is permitted and under what conditions. We make this very easy for you by giving you a downloadable document where you simply fill in the blanks. Click here to see a sample. (We recommend you also put this information on your city web site.) It is extremely important that the city review existing rules and regulations and find ways to cut red tape. We are looking at ways of helping cities get access to best practice from around the world. Pace Car or Civility Outbreak Pledge. The Traffic Taming DVD promote an outbreak of civility - residents making a positive contribution to the life of the city. A pledge form makes this commitment more concrete. The Mental Speed Bumps book goes into far more detail about Traffic Taming techniques than what we can cover on the DVD. Highly informed residents are your city's best allies. Your city can decide whether the books are lent, given or sold to interested residents. Buying a DVD license When you purchase the Traffic Taming DVD, you are buying a license to distribute that particular DVD (in a Kit or through libraries) for a period of one year. Each year we will update the DVD with state-of-the-art practice from around the world and with new informative chapters. We license use of the DVD for one year to prevent out-of-date material circulating and to ensure that you and your city have access to the latest information.
