The DVD teaches kids the three magic ways to tame Dragon Wagons and they are shown practical ways to employ these three magic spells. Kids earn Magic Stars each time they do something that helps make streets safer. For example, each time they walk to school they are resting their Dragon Wagon. The class is given a Class Challenge to collectively earn a certain number of Magic Stars. When they reach this target, they are given a reward such as a double recess or a class party. How it works A Class Champ (volunteer, teacher, city staff person) runs the program in the classroom. We have been careful to minimise the impacts on class time. - Kids watch class presentation on DVD and decide if they will accept the Class Challenge from Red and Fleet. - Kids track their achievements on a wall chart. - When they reach the total, they get their reward. How is Traffic Tamers different to other programs? Focus on independent mobility, not just walk to school. The goal of Traffic Tamers is to improve kids' independent mobility so they can not only walk to school, but can also walk to their friends, or the corner store, or can simply go exploring. This is essential for them to develop a healthy sense of place and independence. (See the bonus chapter on the DVD which explains why walking adventures play a pivotal role in children's psychological well-being.) Focus on adventures: Most Safe-Routes-To-School or walk to school programs look at the issue through adult eyes with a focus on the transport task and safety. Traffic Tamers looks at the issue through kids' eyes and focuses on kids having walking adventures. Holistic approach: Traffic Tamers is unique in that it tackles the causes of traffic problems and not just the symptoms. It gives kids practical tools to reduce both the quantity and speed of traffic on streets. Children educate adults about how they can help make streets safer for kids. Low cost: The program can be run by using just the DVD and materials available in the Downloads section of this site. We have even included a manual for volunteers (links below). However, cities or non-profit organisations can value-add to the program by printing certain materials, such as Pace Car bumper stickers. The artwork for these is available in the Download area and is free of charge for cities and non-profits who have purchased a DVD which comes with a one-year license to use the DVD and free artwork. (For public use of the DVD we only sell a twelve month license. This is so you have access to the latest information and so out-of-date information is not being circulated. We will update the DVD and Traffic Tamer program at least once a year.) Low class impact: We have worked very hard to reduce the impact of this program on class time. It does not require teacher time if it is run by a Class Champ. However, in our experience, teachers discover that Traffic Tamers can be integrated into a broad range of lessons which enhances the learning experience for students. For a detailed explaination of the program see the Class Champs Mini Manual. UK/Australia format (A4 pages)
